Entrevista: The Inspector Cluzo

El dúo francés The Inspector Cluzo no son una banda al uso. Enarbolan la bandera del ecologismo practicando con el ejemplo siendo granjeros en su país y músicos al mismo tiempo. Charlamos con ellos sobre su nuevo álbum y la gira que tienen ya en marcha acompañando a los norteamericanos Clutch. En Diciembre los tendremos por aquí en una única fecha en Madrid.
-Sois una banda que lleva en activo desde 2008, pero no sois muy conocidos aquí en España. ¿Cómo os definiríais para que el público pueda conoceros mejor?
The Inspector Cluzo somos un dúo gascón (suroeste de Francia) de Rock/Blues (guitarra y batería) conocido por sus actuaciones en vivo 100% orgánicas de alta energía sin usar pistas de acompañamiento ni ordenadores.
Hemos lanzado todos los álbumes en nuestro propio sello DIY desde hace 20 años. Autofinanciado, auto gestionado, hemos tocado 1300 conciertos en 67 países: según muchos medios de comunicación hemos sido una de las bandas francesas con más giras del mundo durante 20 años, teniendo una reputación volcánica en vivo reconocida por bandas como Clutch, The Eels, Suicidal Tendencies, Red Hot Chili Peppers o el propio Robert Trujillo. Mantenemos la bandera de la independencia total y la filosofía posterior al crecimiento. También somos agricultores profesionales orgánicos en la granja Lou Casse en Gascuña, donde vivimos frente al cambio climático para las próximas generaciones, siendo pioneros en técnicas agroecológicas (utilizando semillas gratuitas, fertilizantes verdes, etc.).
-¿Qué os hizo decidir formar una banda y, sobre todo, desarrollar un estilo musical como el que practicáis?
Hemos estado tocando música desde que éramos niños, así que, naturalmente, formamos bandas para tocar nuestra música frente a una audiencia. Después de terminar con nuestra antigua banda, decidimos seguir tocando pero solo nosotros dos. Usamos esta oportunidad para crear nuestro sonido sin bajo, solo batería y guitarra. Laurent tuvo que adaptar su forma de tocar la guitarra, tocando las líneas de guitarra y bajo al mismo tiempo, además de cantar, mientras que yo (Mathieu) he tenido que desarrollar más la batería para llenar el vacío intermedio.
-Tradicionalmente, Francia no ha producido muchas bandas de Rock que hayan tenido repercusiones internacionales. ¿Cómo ves todo esto, y especialmente el estado actual de la música en tu país?
Francia no es muy conocida por su cultura rock n roll sino más conocida por su gastronomía. Los medios de comunicación en Francia no están en absoluto interesados en el rock, así que nadie habla de eso. Además, el metal se hizo más popular que el rock, por lo que el rock en Francia sigue siendo realmente underground. Es por eso que tuvimos que exportarlo nosotros mismos a otros países (nuestro primer concierto fue en Glasgow y nuestro primer álbum se lanzó por primera vez en Japón) y luego pudimos tocar el mercado francés y llegar a algunos festivales y algunos medios de comunicación. También podemos decir que ahora, debido a la tecnología, las bandas jóvenes van más bien al electro pop, al rap o al metal pero no al rock. La generación joven no se salta las comidas, por lo que no tiene suficiente hambre para tocar rock n roll. Ahora los raperos son más rock que otras bandas.
-¿Cuáles han sido las principales influencias musicales que ha tenido la banda a la hora de crear su música?
Ambos somos amantes de la música en general, siempre y cuando la música tenga soul. Así que viene del blues, el folk, el viejo hip hop a través de la música clásica y el Jazz, así como el rock n roll, obviamente. Venimos de bandas como Pearl Jam, Neil Young, para quien abrimos en Europa recientemente, o AC/DC, por ejemplo, entre muchas más.
-¿Cómo equilibras tu vida habitual en la granja con las giras con la banda?
Bueno, trabajamos mucho y estamos muy bien organizados. Tratamos de no hacer giras cuando se requiere trabajo pesado en la granja (como cosechar maíz o plantar el trigo, …) por lo que apenas giramos durante el invierno. Además de que Nathalie (la esposa de Laurent) y los vecinos nos ayudan cuando estamos fuera, esta es una fuerte tradición aquí en Gascuña para ayudarnos unos a otros.
-¿Crees que una vida rodeada de naturaleza es ideal en estos tiempos? ¿Te alejas de las grandes ciudades y sus multitudes?
Para nosotros no podía ser diferente, ser autosuficiente requiere estar rodeado de la Naturaleza para cultivar verduras, cereales, criar animales. La crisis de COVID hizo que todos fueran conscientes de esto a pesar de que las grandes ciudades son cada vez más grandes.
No evitamos las grandes ciudades, especialmente para dar conciertos, pero nos sentimos mejor en nuestra granja y rodeados de naturaleza.
-Habéis lanzado música en formato acústico. ¿Te sientes igual de cómodo tocando así o más en formato eléctrico?
Sí, de hecho, lanzamos Brothers in Ideals, una especie de versiones acústicas de We the people of the soil. Componemos nuestra música solo con una guitarra acústica y las voces, luego, cuando tenemos la canción, elegimos tocarla en eléctrico o no o con una banda completa. Lo que importa es la canción en sí.
-Cuéntanos un poco sobre la música que habéis compuesto recientemente. ¿Qué podemos esperar cuando escuchemos vuestro nuevo álbum?
El álbum ha sido grabado en 3 días el pasado noviembre de 2024 y mezclado en 3 días por Vance Powell (nuestro productor desde 2016 y amigo personal).
¡El plan era hacer un álbum muy parecido a lo que llevamos haciendo en vivo durante 20 años! Este álbum es más un álbum de Fuck it como dijo Vance Powell, quien fue a visitarnos a la granja. Así que es un álbum «sin arreglos», solo batería, guitarras y voces. Líricamente, el álbum, entre otras cosas, trata sobre lo que nuestra sociedad tiene que enfrentar: un hecho universal y global total, el cambio climático.
El proceso creativo ha tomado casi 2 años. Siempre escribimos canciones a la antigua: con una guitarra acústica. Si la canción está bien solo con la guitarra acústica y la letra, entonces decimos: OK, ya lo tenemos pero no son los arreglos o la producción lo que va a hacer que la canción funcione, la base es la canción en sí, Vance funciona así (a la manera de Nashville) y nosotros también, desde el principio.
Para este álbum profundizamos en los libros de D.H Thoreau Walden y Civil Desobelience y escribimos una canción sobre él. Es el primer ecologista real que habló sobre lo que hoy llamamos «post crecimiento». Tim Jackson ha desarrollado el concepto, pero Thoreau encontró el camino y lo experimentó él mismo, por eso es aún más fuerte: aplicar y experimentar tus propias convicciones, por ti mismo. También profundizó en La sociedad del espectáculo de Guy Debord, el filósofo francés que describía exactamente el mundo en el que vivimos ahora pero en 1967. Dijo en 1967:
«En un mundo que realmente está patas arriba, lo verdadero es un momento de lo falso».
Suena como nuestro mundo hoy en día…
-Tenéis una extensa gira por Estados Unidos y Europa que os llevará a una sola fecha aquí en España, concretamente en Madrid, a finales de año. ¿Qué puede esperar el público español de vuestro show?
Actualmente tenemos una gran gira programada que incluye la apertura de nuestros grandes amigos Clutch en el Medio Oeste de los Estados Unidos, visitaremos toda Europa en otoño y estamos planeando visitar todos los países que visitamos hasta ahora (hicimos más de 1200 conciertos en 67 países). España es parte de esos países, tocamos en festivales en Galicia (Tsunami Xixón y Resurrection Fest, así como Azkena Rock al comienzo de la banda). Tocaremos en Madrid el 10 de diciembre, con suerte volveremos y tocaremos más en España en 2026. La gente escuchará un rock n roll potente y enérgico, tocado solo por dos tipos (batería, guitarras y voces), sin pistas de acompañamiento ni ordenador en el escenario, solo un espectáculo en vivo 100% orgánico.

Interview: The Inspector Cluzo
The French duo The Inspector Cluzo aren’t an average band. They fly the flag for environmentalism by leading by example, being farmers in their home country and musicians at the same time. We chatted with them about their new album and the tour they’re already underway with the American band Clutch. They’ll be here for a single date in Madrid in December.
-You’re a band that’s been active since 2008, but you’re not very well-known here in Spain. How would you define yourselves so the public can get to know you better?
The Inspector Cluzo is a Gascon (South West of France) Rock/Blues duo (Guitar & Drums) well known for its high energy 100% organic live performances without using backing-tracks or any computers.
They have released all their albums on their own DIY label since 20 years now. Self-financed, self-managed, played 1300 gigs in 67 countries: according to lots of medias they’ve been one of the French band touring the most in the world for 20 years. Having a volcanic live reputation recognized by bands such like Clutch, The Eels, Suicidal Tendencies, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Robert Trujillo himself. Keeping up the flag of total independence and post growth philosophy. They are also organic professional farmers at Lou Casse farm in Gascony where they live facing the climate change for next generations, pioneering agro-Ecologic technics (using free seeds, green fertilizers, etc).
-What made you decide to form a band and, above all, to develop a musical style like the one you practice?
We’ve been playing music since we are kids so naturally we formed bands to play our music in front of an audience. After ending our former band, we decided to keep on playing the music but only the two of us. We used this opportunity to create our sound without a bass only drums and guitar. Laurent had to adapt his guitar playing actually playing both guitar and bass lines in the same time as well as singing whereas Mathieu has to develop more his drumming to fill the gap in between.
-Traditionally, France hasn’t produced many Rock Bands that have had international repercussions. How do you see all this, and especially the current state of music in your country?
France is not well known for its rock n roll culture, more known for its gastronomy. Medias in France are absolutely not into rock at all so nobody speaks about that. Besides Metal became more popular than rock so rock in France remains really confidential. That’s why we had to export ourselves in other countries (our first gig ever was in Glasgow and our first album has been first released in Japan) then we could touch the French market and reach some festivals as well as some medias. We can also say that now, due to the technology, the young bands go rather to electro pop or rap or metal but not to Rock. The young generation doesn’t miss meals so are not hungry enough to play some rock n roll. Now the rappers are more rock than other bands.
-What have been the main musical influences the band has had when creating their music?
We are both music lovers in general as long as the music has soul. So it comes from the b lues, folk to the old hip hop via classical music and jazz as well as rock n roll obviously. It comes from bands like Pearl Jam, Neil Young who we opened for in Europe recently or AC/DC for example among many more.
-How do you balance your regular farm life with touring with the band?
Well, we work a lot and are very well organized, we try not to tour when heavy work is required at the farm (like corn harvesting or planting the wheat, …) so we hardly tour during the Winter. Besides we are helped by Nathalie (Laurent’s wife) and the neighbours when we are away, this is a strong tradition here in Gascony to help each other.
-Do you think a life surrounded by nature is ideal in these times? Do you shy away from big cities and their crowds?
For us it could not be different, being self-sufficient requires to be surround by the Nature to grow vegetables, cereals, raise animals. The COVID crisis made everybody aware of this even though big cities are getting bigger and bigger.
We do not avoid big cities especially to play concerts but we feel better in our farm and surrounded by nature.
-You’ve released music in acoustic format. Do you feel equally comfortable playing like that or more in an electric format?
Yes indeed we did release Brothers in Ideals, a kind of acoustic versions of We the people of the soil. We compose our music with only an acoustic guitar and the vocals then when we have the song we choose to play it in electric or not or with a full orchestra. What matters is the song itself.
-Tell us a little about the music you’ve recently composed. What can we expect when we listen to your new album?
The album has been recorded in 3 days last Nov. 2024 and mixed in 3 days by Vance Powell (our producer since 2016 and our friend).
The plan was to do an album very close from what we do live for 20 years! This album is more a Fuck it album as said Vance Powell who went to visit us at the Farm. So it’s a “no arrangement” album, just drums, guitars and vocals. Lyrically the album among other things deals with what our society has to face: a total universal and global fact: Climate Change.
The creative process has taken almost 2 years. We always write songs the old way: with an acoustic guitar, if the song is fine with just the acoustic guitar and the lyrics, then we say “ok” we got one but it is not arrangements or production which are gonna make the song the basis is the song itself, Vance works like this (Nashville way) and us too, since the beginning.
For this album we digged into D.H Thoreau Walden and Civil desobelience books and we wrote a song about him, he’s the first real ecologist who spoke about what we called today “post growth”. Tim Jackson has developed the concept but Thoreau found the way and experienced it himself, so this is why it’s even stronger: applying and experiencing your own convictions, by yourself. Also digged into “the society of spectacle “of Guy Debord the French philosophe who described exactly the world we’re living in now but in 1967. He said in 1967:
”In a world which really is topsy-turvy, the true is a moment of the false.”
It sounds like our world nowadays.
-You have an extensive tour of the United States and Europe that will bring you to a single date here in Spain, specifically in Madrid, at the end of the year. What can Spanish audiences expect from your show?
We have currently indeed a big tour lined up including opening for our big friends Clutch in the US Midwest, we’ll visit all Europe at the fall and we are planning to visit all countries we visited so far (we did more than 1200 gigs in 67 countries). Spain is a part of those countries, we played festivals in Galicia (Tsunami Xixon and Resurrection Fest as well as Azkena Rock at the beginning of the band). We’ll play Madrid on Dec 10th, hopefully we’ll come back and play more in Spain in 2026. People will hear some high energy loud rock n roll, played by two guys only (drums, guitars and vocals), no backing tracks or computer on stage, only a 100% organic live show.
