Entrevistamos a Bossk: ‘Entraremos a estudio en septiembre para grabar nuestro próximo álbum’

Entrevistamos a Bossk. English below!

Hemos tenido la oportunidad de entrevistar a Tom Begley, frontman de la banda de metal atmosférico británica Bossk. Es toda una suerte poder hablar con ellos puesto que, tal y como nos ha comentado, entrarán a grabar un nuevo álbum en septiembre. Entre otras cosas, hemos podido hablar sobre el festival ArcTanGent y otros festivales similares además de la escena musical inglesa o la evolución como banda.

• En primer lugar, muchas gracias por tu tiempo. ¿Cómo va todo en la banda?

¡Todo va genial ahora mismo! ¡Estamos más ocupados de lo que nunca hemos estado!

• Para aquellas personas que no os conocen, quiero preguntar algunas cosas sobre vuestra creación. ¿Podríais hacer una pequeña introducción para el público de España?

Somos una banda de metal atmosférico del sureste de Inglaterra.

• ¿Cómo empezó la banda? ¿Por qué elegisteis ese nombre?

Los nombres de las bandas siempre son conflictivos. Nos llevó su tiempo decidir uno. Star Wars siempre fue una parte enorme de nuestra infancia y es una franquicia que alcanza un público amplio. Creo que es lo mismo que siempre quisimos para la banda.

• ¿Cuáles fueron vuestras principales influencias?

Musicalmente, en un principio, serían Cult of Luna, Oceansize, Smoking Tons of Weed, pero intentamos hacer algo diferente a las otras bandas de nuestra ciudad.

• ¿Qué canción recomendarías para introduciros a gente que no os ha escuchado nunca?

Reverie II es probablemente la canción que más representa nuestro sonido.

• Creo que vuestro sonido es muy complejo. Creáis canciones largas que van progresando y evolucionando en una mezcla de diferentes sonidos y géneros. ¿Cómo definiríais vosotros vuestro propio sonido?

¡Creo que es exactamente como lo describiría! Queríamos destacar entre la multitud y forzarnos a nosotros mismos en lo creativo tanto como fuera posible.

• Habéis tenido una historia difícil como banda, teniendo en cuenta que empezasteis en 2006. ¿Creéis que habéis encontrado cierta estabilidad ahora?

¡Eso creo! Al principio girábamos mucho, ahora somos más selectivos con los shows que hacemos. Intentamos no repetirnos y concentrarnos en las cosas que queremos hacer.

• Probablemente vuestro álbum más conocido sea Audio Noir. ¿Podrías contarme algo sobre la creación del disco y de la relación con el resto de vuestros trabajos?

La mayoría de ideas existían antes de que nos separáramos. El proceso de grabación fue muy diferente de lo que hicimos en nuestros trabajos previos. Creo que los sigue perfectamente y muestra lo mucho que hemos progresado como banda con el paso de los años.

• Este año habéis tocado en algunos de los festivales más prestigiosos de Europa como el Roadburn o el Dunk! ¿Que nos puedes contar sobre ellos?

Tanto el Roadburn como el Dunk! son enormes peldaños para nosotros. Ambos tienen una audiencia mundial y estamos muy orgullosos de haber formado parte de los dos.

• Habéis tocado en muchas ediciones del ATG. ¿Qué pensáis del festival en relación con la escena en Bristol y en Reino Unido?

Es uno de nuestros favoritos para tocar y ser parte de su crecimiento es impresionante. Su promotor James es un gran amigo nuestro y nos ha tratado como familia desde que tocamos por primera vez. No sabemos mucho acerca de la escena de Bristol pero ATG se está convirtiendo en una de las mayores apuestas de la escena de Reino Unido, trayendo diversas bandas que por lo general son ignoradas en los festivales de metal más mainstream.

• ¿Y qué diferencias veis con otros festivales, especialmente si están localizados en otros países o son más grandes que el ATG?

Realmente nos da igual si es más grande o más pequeño, queremos formar parte de algo especial. ATG intenta conformar un cartel que es diferente y desafiante para la audiencia.

• El cartel de esta edición del ATG es increíble. Tenemos muchas ganas de ver a algunas bandas. ¿Qué bandas no os vais a perder vosotros?

Para mí, personalmente, Nordic Giants, Clt Drp, Pijn, Cult of Luna y Battles.

• ¿Es difícil crecer como banda en Reino Unido? ¿Tenéis ayuda de otras bandas? ¿La gente en Reino Unido suele escuchar géneros más minoritarios como hardcore, post-metal, sludge metal…?

Para serte honesto, estamos un poco separados de otras bandas de Reino Unido. Tenemos un montón de partidarios que ahora están en bandas y que la primera vez que nos escucharon fue hace diez años. Nosotros solo intentamos hacer lo nuestro. Me gusta pensar que somos una banda que puede conseguir fans de todos los géneros musicales.

• ¿Hay algún lugar o país en especial donde queráis tocar? ¿Y algún festival?

Queremos tocar en Japón fervientemente y nos estamos forzando a hacer cosas nuevas. No tenemos interés en repetirnos o tocar música siguiendo el juego de la industria. No tenemos prisa.

• ¿Recuerdas algún momento especial como banda? ¿Puedes describirlo?

La pasada edición del ATG fue un show muy importante para nosotros. En el escenario hubo un momento en el que todos nos miramos y nos sonreímos al mismo tiempo. Es muy guay sentir que estábamos en el escenario otra vez juntos.

• Bueno, y después de los próximos shows, ¿qué planes tenéis? ¿Quizás un nuevo álbum o un nuevo tour?

Entraremos al estudio en septiembre para empezar a trabajar en el próximo álbum. No va a ser un disco normal de Bossk… tendréis noticias sobre eso pronto…

• Por favor, ¿podrías decir algunas palabras a tus fans en España?

¡Muchas gracias por vuestro apoyo! Esperamos volver a España pronto. De hecho tocamos en España antes de tocar en Londres. ¡Hace muchos años! ¡Y fue una experiencia loca para nosotros siendo una banda tan joven!

• First of all, thank you so much for your time. Well, how’s everything going on the band?

Everything right now is great! We are the busiest we’ve ever been!

• For people which don’t know the band I want to ask some questions about the creation. Could you introduce yourselves to the Spanish audience?

We are an atmospheric metal band from the south east of England.

• How did the band start? Why did you choose that name?

Band names are always tricky. It took quite a while to decide on one. Star Wars was a huge part of a few members childhoods, and is a franchise that appeals to a wide audience. I guess we wanted the same thing for the band.

• Which are your main influences?

Musically in the early days probably Cult of Luna, Oceansize, Smoking Tons of Weed. And trying to do something different to the other bands that came from our town.

• Which song would you recommend for non-listeners to get into your music?

Reverie II is probably the song that represents our sound the most.

• Your sound is very complex. You create long progressive songs that evolve with a mixture of different sounds and genres. How do you define your own sound?

I think that’s exactly how we would describe it!! We want to stand out from the crowd, and push ourselves creatively as much as possible.

• You have a difficult story as a band keeping in mind that you started in 2006. Do you think the band has reached a certain stability now?

I think so! In the early days we toured real hard, now we are a lot more selective with the shows that we play. We try to not repeat ourselves, and focus on things that we all want to do.

• Probably your most known album is ‘Audio Noir’. Could you please tell us something about the creation of the album and the relation with the rest of your works?

A lot of the ideas existed before we disbanded, the recording process was very different from what we did on the previous releases. I think it follows on nicely from them, and shows how much we have evolved as a band over the years.

• This year you played at some of the most prestigious festivals in Europe as Roadburn Festival or Dunk! Festival. What could you tell us about?

Both Dunk and Roadburn were huge milestones for us. Both festivals have a worldwide audience, and we were very proud to be a part of both lineups.

• You played in many editions of ArcTanGent festival. What are your thoughts about ATG fest in relation with the local scene in Bristol and UK?

It’s one of our favourite festivals to play, and to be part of its growth is awesome. The promoter James is a great friend, and has treated us like family since the first time we played. We don’t know much about the Bristol scene, but ATG is becoming a major player in the UK festival scene, bringing diverse bands together that would ordinarily be ignored by mainstream metal festivals.

• And what differences do you see with other festivals, specially if they are located in other countries or they are bigger than ATG?

Size doesn’t really matter to our band, we want to be part of something special, ATG is trying to curate a lineup that is different and challenging for the audience.

• ArcTanGent line-up this year is amazing. We can’t wait to see some bands. Which shows wouldn’t you miss?

For me personally, Nordic giants, clt drp, Pijn, Cult of Luna and Battles!

• Is it difficult to grow as a band in UK? Do you have some help from other bands? Do people in UK usually listen minorities genres as hardcore, post-metal, sludge metal…?

To be honest we are kinda separate from other UK bands. We have a lot of supporters that are now in bands, that first listened to the band almost 10 years ago. We just try and do our thing, I’d like to think that we are a band that can appeal to fans of all genres of music.

• Is there any place or country that you want to perform particularly in? And any festival that you want to play in?

We want to play in Japan really badly, and keep pushing ourselves to do new things. We have no interest in repeating ourselves, or playing the music industry game. No rush.

• Do you remember a special moment as a band? Could you describe it?

ATG last year was a very important show for us, onstage there was a moment when we all looked at each other across the stage, and all smiled at the same time. Felt very cool to feel like that onstage together.

• Well, after all the upcoming shows, what plans do you have? Maybe a new album incoming? Or maybe a tour?

We are in the studio in September to begin work on the next release, it’s not a regular Bossk album… more news on that soon….

• Please, could you say some words to your Spanish fans?

Thank you so much for your support!! We hope to come back to Spain soon. We actually played Spain before we played in London. Many many years ago! And was such a crazy experience for us as a young band.
