Entrevista a Patrick Jansson, ex-batería de Hellsingland Underground
Hablamos sobre sus nuevos proyectos musicales y de otras cosas muy interesantes relacionadas con su pasado, presente y futuro musical.
¡Hola Patrik! Preséntate a los que no te conocen aquí en España y cuéntanos qué estás haciendo musicalmente estos días.
¡Hola! Mi nombre es Patrik Jansson y soy un multi-instrumentista, compositor, director de video y productor de Suecia. He sido miembro fundador de la banda de glam-punk Maryslim, el grupo de rock norteño Hellsingland Underground, la banda de metal Defueld y Chris Laneys Legion (con el productor / compositor de canciones Chris Laney ahora con Pretty Maids) por nombrar algunos. También tengo mi propia banda de blues-rock llamada Patrik Jansson Band con la que he lanzado cuatro álbumes y he recorrido Europa muchas veces. Más recientemente comencé otro proyecto simplemente llamado Patrik Jansson donde escribí, grabé y produje todo yo mismo, incluso toqué todos los instrumentos, excepto la armónica y las trompas. A mediados de abril, yo, o nosotros, vamos a otra gira europea en la que realmente seré telonero para mí mismo (risas). Tuve la loca idea de tocar primero con Patrik Jansson Band y luego un set más corto con Patrik Jansson para apoyar el nuevo álbum Game Changer. Así que eso va a ser muy divertido.
Aquellos de nosotros que te conocemos por tu paso como batería de Hellsingland Underground. ¿Cómo fue tu decisión de dejar la banda y abrirte camino en tu carrera en solitario como cantante y guitarrista?
Había estado con Hellsingland desde el principio y la banda ya había pasado por algunos cambios de formación. En ese momento estaba pasando por un momento difícil con mi padre con alzheimer y enfermedades cardíacas y sentí que la banda realmente no iba a ninguna parte o estaba abriendo nuevos caminos, por así decirlo, y solo necesitaba hacer algunos cambios en mi vida. Tuve una conversación con Charlie (cantante de la banda) por teléfono y decidí que era hora de concentrarme en cosas nuevas. Esto fue durante la pandemia, así que nada iba a ninguna parte musicalmente realmente, pero en ese momento sentí que ya no había alegría y que la magia se había ido. Además, ya había lanzado cuatro álbumes y girado mucho con mi propia banda, la Patrik Jansson Band, así que no era algo nuevo para mí liderar una banda. Simplemente sentí que quería concentrarme más en mis propias cosas. Todavía estoy muy orgulloso de los álbumes que hicimos con HU y hablo con Charlie y Peter de vez en cuando.
El año pasado publicaste el álbum Game Charger para el que has grabado algunos videoclips para promocionarlo. Cuéntanos sobre el proceso de grabación y composición del mismo. SEGUIR AQUÍ
En realidad, todo surgió porque se suponía que debía ir de gira con Hellsingland Underground, a España en realidad, pero la gira se canceló en el último minuto debido al coronavirus y de repente tuve unas dos semanas sin nada planeado y tiempo en mis manos, así que en lugar de sentarme sin hacer nada, imaginé que usaría el tiempo a mi favor y haría algo creativo. Tenía un montón de canciones e ideas por ahí y decidí hacer algo con ellas. Terminé las canciones y las grabé en mi estudio. Primero puse algunas pistas básicas de guitarra en una pista de clic, luego grabé la batería para eso. Después de eso, volví a grabar las guitarras y los solos de guitarra, grabé los bajos, teclados / órganos y, por último, pero no menos importante, grabé las voces y la percusión. El objetivo era escribir y grabar música sin poner límites o ideas preconcebidas de cómo debería sonar. Fue muy liberador y divertido, pero requirió mucho trabajo duro. Me encantan muchos tipos diferentes de música y con este álbum podría traer muchas influencias diferentes y experiencias pasadas y dejar que todo brille. Encontrarás rock pesado, americana, jazz y fusión, punk, blues y música pop, incluso reggae en realidad. Pero realmente creo que funciona, todo se fusiona de alguna manera y creo que eso es lo que lo hace interesante.
¿Cómo ha sido el cambio de rol a la hora de afrontar los directos como frontman y no como baterista?
Bueno, disfruto de ambos, pero de diferentes maneras. Como baterista, puedo escuchar y tocar, reaccionar con la música y lo que sucede a mi alrededor. Es más fácil de alguna manera, tal vez porque solo tengo que tocar la batería, un instrumento que he tocado desde que era un niño. Siendo guitarrista / cantante y líder, hay mucho más en lo que centrarse. ¿Cómo puedo involucrar a la audiencia, por ejemplo? Necesitas enfocarte en muchas cosas diferentes, como mantener unida a la banda, la respuesta del público, mis solos de guitarra, mi voz y cómo me conecto con el público. Todavía toco la batería con diferentes proyectos y me encanta la batería, pero también me encanta cantar y tocar la guitarra, y escribir canciones. Ahora mismo estoy feliz de no tener que elegir.
Me encanta todo tipo de música y he tocado casi todo tipo de música, desde Jazz hasta Black Metal.
Cuéntanos un poco sobre tus influencias musicales y cómo definirías el estilo de tus canciones.
Me encanta todo tipo de música y he tocado casi todo tipo de música, desde Jazz hasta Black Metal. Todavía escucho y disfruto todo tipo de música, desde jazz y fusión como Miles Davis, Joshua Redman, Chick Corea y Weather Repport hasta blues y blues rock como B.B. King, Johnny Winter, ZZ Top y Joe Bonamassa. También me encanta Bob Marley y la música pop como Adele y Madonna, y por supuesto todo tipo de rock como The Clash, Pink Floyd, Rival Sons, etc. Incluso electrónica y black/death metal como The Prodidgy, Slayer y Dimmu Borgir. Como he dicho hay un par de bandas a las que siempre vuelvo y que han estado allí desde que comencé a tocar, bandas como Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy y Iron Maiden. Pero tengo favoritos en todos los géneros. Para mí solo hay dos tipos de música realmente, buena y mala. Supongo que eso brilla en el álbum Game Changer, mucho más que en Patrik Jansson Band, donde todo es una especie de blues moderno o blues-rock. Pero también está destinado a ser así. Es una decisión que he tomado para separar a Patrik Jansson de Patrik Jansson Band. Necesito ser creativo y necesito tener diferentes canales para esa creatividad, es por eso que «Patrik Jansson» como banda o artista puede ser más diverso que Patrik Jansson Band. Esa es también una razón por la que hago todos los videos y todo mi trabajo artístico, es otro tipo de creatividad. Pero para responder a tu pregunta, llamaría a Game Changer un álbum de rock y los cuatro álbumes que he hecho con Patrik Jansson Band blues o blues-rock.
Normalmente das conciertos en Suecia e incluso en países cercanos como Alemania, Suiza, Austria, Italia e incluso Francia. ¿Tiene planes de hacer una gira más extensa y venir a España a presentar tus canciones?
¡Me encantaría eso! Me encanta España. Todavía estoy planeando mudarme allí algún día. Me encanta la gente, la comida, la cultura y el hecho de que es un país amante de la música rock donde la mayoría de las personas que he conocido son muy amables y agradables. Me encantaría tocar en algunos festivales y hacer una gira adecuada por España. Solo estoy esperando la oportunidad adecuada.
¿Cómo ves la escena musical en Suecia? Sois un país muy prolífico en la exportación de bandas de Rock.
Desafortunadamente, el coronavirus ha destruido gran parte de la escena musical, esa y la política estúpida donde la gente se muda a las ciudades porque quieren estar en el centro de lo que está sucediendo, donde la gente sale, va a conciertos, etc. Así que compran un apartamento, luego quieren proteger su inversión, por lo que comienzan a quejarse de los niveles de ruido diciendo que deberían estar tranquilos por las noches, lo que ha obligado a muchos clubes a cerrar y esto mata la vida nocturna y, por supuesto, la música. Quiero decir, si no fue fácil durante el coronavirus poseer un gran lugar de música, debe ser imposible cuando el propietario te dice que no puedes tener música en vivo porque tiene que estar tranquilo después de las diez de la noche. El problema es que la zona una vez tan atractiva ya no será tan atractiva cuando no queden clubes, bares ni nada. Debido a esto, no quedan muchos escenarios para actuar para las bandas venideras desafortunadamente.
Hablando de Suecia, ahí tienes el Sweden Rock Festival, que es uno de los más importantes de Europa. ¿Ves alguna posibilidad de tocar allí algún día o es difícil para los artistas y bandas locales?
Es muy difícil ya que todas las bandas de rock en Suecia quieren tocar allí, pero yo he tocado allí hace años con Maryslim. Me encantaría hacerlo de nuevo, aunque con mi propia banda.
En unas semanas tendremos Hellsingland Underground de gira aquí de nuevo y personalmente extrañaré verte con ellos. Ha sido un duro viaje de aplazamiento de giras debido a la pandemia. ¿Sigues en contacto con ellos a pesar de que has decidido seguir tu camino por tu cuenta?
Gracias, eso significa mucho para escuchar. Estoy en contacto con algunos de los chicos como Charlie y Peter. Con los otros chicos realmente no tenía mucho contacto incluso antes de renunciar. Quiero decir que estuve en la banda durante unos 15 años y la gente puede cambiar mucho con el tiempo. Tener hijos, mudarse de vuelta a casa, etc. Martin y yo éramos vecinos cuando vivíamos en Estocolmo y pasamos más tiempo juntos entonces. Pasamos el rato cuando nos reuníamos para los ensayos,grabar o girar pero no tanto entre eso.
Para terminar, cuéntanos cómo ha sido tu relación con nuestro país las veces que has estado aquí de gira y sobre todo con el público que ha acudido a los conciertos.
Como dije antes, amo España y amo al público español, son los mejores y realmente espero poder volver a recorrer España pronto con una de mis propias bandas, ya sea como Patrik Jansson o con Patrik Jansson Band.

Hello Patrik! Introduce yourself to those who don’t know you here in Spain and tell us what you are doing musically these days.
Hello! My name is Patrik Jansson and I am a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, video director and producer from Sweden. I have been a founding member of the glam-punk band Maryslim, northern-rock act Hellsingland Underground, the metal band Defueld and Chris Laneys Legion (with demon producer/song writer Chris Laney now with Pretty Maids) to name a few. I also have my own blues-rock band called the Patrik Jansson Band that I have released four albums with and toured Europe with many times. Most recently I started another project simply called Patrik Jansson where I wrote, recorded and produced everything myself, I even played all the instruments, exept for harmonica and the horns. In mid april I, or we, are going on another European tour where I will actually be support act to my self, hahaha. I had this crazy idea to first play with Patrik Jansson Band and then a shorter sett with Patrik Jansson to support the new album Game Changer. So that is going to be a lot of fun.
Those of us who know you have been through your time as a drummer in Hellsingland Underground. How was your decision to leave the band and make your way in your solo career as a singer and guitarist?
I had been with Hellsingland since the start and the band had gone through a few lineup changes already. At that point I was going through a rough time with my father beeing I´ll with altzheimers and heart disease and I felt that the band was not really going anywhere or breaking any new ground so to speak, and I just needed to make some changes in my life. I had an conversation with Charlie over the phone and I just decided it was time for me to focus on new things. This was during the pandemic mind you, so nothing was going anywhere musically really, but then and there I felt like there was no joy in it any more and that the magic was gone. Also I had already released four albums and toured a lot with my own band, the Patrik Jansson Band so it was not a new thing for me to front a band. I just felt I wanted to focus more on my own things. I am still very proud of the albums we did with HU and I speak to Charlie and Peter from time to time.
Last year you published the album Game Charger for which you have recorded some video clips to promote it. Tell us about the recording and composition process of it.
Actually the whole thing came about because I was supposed to go on tour with Helssingland Underground, to Spain actually, but the tour got cancelled in the last minute because of corona and suddenly I had about two weeks with nothing planned and time on my hands so instead of sitting around doing nothing, I figgured I would use the time to my advantage and do something creative. I had a bunch of songs and ideas lying around and I decided to do something with them. I finnished the songs and recorded them in my studio. First I put down some basic guitar tracks to a click track, then I recorded the drums to that. After that I re-tracked the guitars and guitar solos, recorded the basses, keyboards/organs and last but not least I recorded the vocals and percussion. The goal was to write and record music without puting up any boundaries or pre-concieved ideas of how it should sound. It was very liberating and fun but it took a lot of hard work. I love so many different kinds of music and with this album I could bring in many different influences and past experiences and let it all shine through. You will find heavy rock, americana, jazz & fusion, punk, blues and pop music on there, even reggae actually. But I really think it works, it all melds together somehow and I think that is what makes it interesting.
How has the change of role been when facing live shows as a frontman and not as a drummer?
well, I enjoy both but in different ways. As a drummer I can just listen and play, reeact to the music and whats going on around me. It is easier some how, maybe becaus I only have to play the drums, an instrument I have played since I was a kid. Being a guitarplayer/singer and a frontman there are a lot more to focus on. How do I get the audience involved for instance? You need to focus on so many different things like holding the band together, the audiences response, my guitar soloing, my singing and how I connect with the audience. I still play drums with different projects and I love the drums, but I love to sing and play guitar also, and to write songs. Right now I am happy I don´t have to choose.

Tell us a little about your musical influences and how you would define the style of your songs.
I love all kinds of music and I have played almost every kind of music from jazz to black metal. I still listen to and enjoy it all kinds of music, from jazz and fusion like Miles Davis, Joshua Redman, Chick Corea and weather Repport to blues and blues rock like B.B. King, Johnny Winter, ZZ Top and Joe Bonamassa. I also love Bob Marley and pop music like Adele and early Madonna, and of course all kinds of rock like The Clash, Pink Floyd, Rival Sons etc. Even electronica and black/death metal like The Prodidgy, Slayer and Dimmu Borgir. That beeing said there are a couple of bands I always come back to snd thats been there since I first started playing bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden. But I have favourites in all genres. To me there is only two kinds of music really, good and bad. I guess that shines through on the Game Changer album, a lot more than in Patrik Jansson Band where it´s all sort of modern blues or blues-rock. But it´s also meant to be that way. It´s a decision I´ve made to separate Patrik Jansson from Patrik Jansson Band. I need to be creative and I need to have different channels for that creativity, thats why ”Patrik Jansson” as a band or artist can be more diverse than Patrik Jansson Band. That is also a reason I make all the videos and all my art work, it´s another kind creativity. But to answer your question I would call Game Changer a rockalbum and the four albums I have made with Patrik Jansson Band blues or blues-rock.
Normally you give concerts in Sweden and even in nearby countries like Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and even France. Do you have plans to do a more extensive tour and come to Spain to present your songs?
I would love that! I love Spain. I am still planning on moving here some day. I love the people, the food, the culture and the fact that it´s a rock music loving country where the most people I have met are so friendly and nice. I would love to play some festivals and do a proper tour of Spain. I´m just waiting for the right opportunity.
How do you see the music scene in Sweden? You are a very prolific country in exporting Rock bands.
Unfortunatly corona has destroyed so much of the music scene, that and stupid politics where people move into the citys because they want to be in the center of whats happening, where people go out, go to concerts etc. So they buy an appartment, then they want to protect their investment so they start to complain about the noice levels saying that it should be quiet in the evenings which have forced a lot of clubs to close and this kills the nightlife and ofcourse the music sceen. I mean if it was´nt easy during corona to own a large music venue, it must be impossible when the landlord tells you you cant have live music because it has to be quiet after ten in the evening. The problem is that the once so attractive area will not be that attractive anymore when there is no clubs, bars or anything left. Because of this, there are not that many sceens left to perform on for up comming bands unfortunatly.
Speaking of Sweden, there you have the Sweden Rock Festival which is one of the most important in Europe. Do you see any possibility of playing there one day or is it difficult for local artists and bands?
It is very difficult since every rock band in Sweden wants to play there, but I have played there years ago with Maryslim. Would love to do it again though with my own band.
In a few weeks we will have Hellsingland Underground touring here again and I will personally miss seeing you with them. It has been a hard journey of postponement of tours due to the pandemic. Are you still in contact with them even though you have decided to follow your path on your own?
Thank you, that means a lot to hear. I am in contact with a few of the guys like Charlie and Peter. The other guys I did not really have that much contact with even before I quit. I mean I was in the band for about maybe 15 years and people can change a lot over time. Having kids, moving back home etc. Martin and me were nighbours when we lived in Stockholm we hang out more then. We hang out when we got together for rehearsals or recordin/toruing but not so much between that.
To finish, tell us how your relationship with our country has been the times you’ve been here on tour and especially with the public that has gone to the concerts.
Like I said earlier, I love Spain and I love the spannish audience, they are the best and I really hope that I can tour Spain again soon with one of my own bands, either as Patrik Jansson or with Patrik Jansson Band.
